Riccardo Cotarella is one of Italy's most famous consulting winemakers, with 80 clients throughout the country. Cottarella has received almost every accolade possible as a winemaker from being named the Best Winemaker in Italy by Gambero Rosso, Winemaker of the Year by Wine Enthusiast, Best Italian Winemaker by ASI, and more. He has been Knighted in the Order of Merit in Italy, one of the highest honors given to civilians in Italy. Riccardo is also a Professor of Viticulture and Enology at the University of Viterbo and President of Assoenologi Italy, Union Internationale des Œnologues. Famiglia Cotarella is his family's set of personal wine estates and brands that is now run by the third generation of the Cotarella family.

Beginning with a historical focus on the indigenous white varieties found in Umbria and Lazio, this family-owned portfolio has grown to represent classic red and white blends, outstanding expressions of Merlot, and a boutique production of Brunello di Montalcino – all grown and vinified with care by the 3rd generation.

In 2017, the Cotarella Family purchased the Tuscan estate of Le Macioche, a 3.5-hectare vineyard, an olive grove, the cellar, and the farmhouse.
